Chapter 1 · Act I · sample chapter excerpt
He’d been three days out of Ashford when he smelled the smoke—the wrong kind, not hearth-fire or forge-smoke but the flat, mineral bite of stone that had changed its mind about being stone. He’d been heading nowhere in particular, the way a man does when the war is over and the shape of peacetime hasn’t settled yet. A hedge-knight’s work: a missing horse here, a disputed boundary there. Small things. Useful things. Things that didn’t ask him to be more than he was.
Then the smoke.
Thornwick still smoked when Caelin rode in at first light.
