Story Overview
Ember-born fire sorcerer Caelin Thorne rides into Thornwick at first light and finds the village transformed by dragonfire. He saves the child Mira; Elder Gareth points him to a black-glass crater beyond the hedgerow, where the dying dragon Vharisax binds a scale to him. After the binding, the rogue Vex — Virella Sunshadow — steps out of the smoke and takes the road with him.

A caster-first ember-born fire sorcerer in a charred-red runic duster. Chapter 1 follows him into transformed Thornwick at first light, where he saves Mira and is bound to Vharisax's scale.
Vharisax
The dying dragon in the crater past Thornwick. She binds an obsidian-red scale to Caelin so the compact can continue, then disintegrates into golden ash.
Vex / Virella Sunshadow

Nyx to anyone who wants something. A court-dressed warlock bound to something old, who collects secrets and follows the sums of "nine arts, nine lights". She joins the company between two wind-carved pillars in Chapter 4.
