A caster-first ember-born fire sorcerer in a charred-red runic duster. Chapter 1 follows him into transformed Thornwick at first light, where he saves Mira and is bound to Vharisax's scale.
The dying dragon in the crater past Thornwick. She binds an obsidian-red scale to Caelin so the compact can continue, then disintegrates into golden ash.
Virella Sunshadow, called Vex. A twin-dagger rogue with mismatched eyes who has been tracking the dragon. She joins Caelin after the binding — not before.
An ordained paladin who is not the Chapter 1 viewpoint. She joins the company in Chapter 2 of the live prose, after Caelin and Vex have already left Thornwick.
A copper-bearded dwarf artificer from Deepstone Hold and occasional brewer of exploding ale. His clan once chased dragon-forges; he carries his grandfather's blood-written journal and follows his instruments over the crater rim in Chapter 2.
A druid of the Green from Sylvaran Grove who studied endings until her circle called it wrong. She steps onto the trail under the dying oaks in Chapter 3, and easing Caelin's pain costs her.
A soldier whose empire fell. Ice-blue eyes, a long coat, a scarred long knife, and a habit of keeping to the rear. He first appears by the fire in the drake-cut cave in Chapter 3 and says he is pulled along the same path.
Nyx to anyone who wants something. A court-dressed warlock bound to something old, who collects secrets and follows the sums of "nine arts, nine lights". She joins the company between two wind-carved pillars in Chapter 4.
Smaller roles that still matter to the story.
The child Caelin pulls from a collapsed cottage in Thornwick. She heard the dying dragon's rhyme during the fire and remembered it when no one else could.
Elder of Thornwick who survives the dragonfire, recognizes the ember-born mark, and points Caelin to the black-glass crater beyond the hedgerow.
